Reporting on Globalization

A Comparative Analysis of Sourcing Patterns in Five Countries' Newspapers

This article is a comparative study of news sources used in five countries facing vastly different economic circumstances. Based on a content analysis of newspaper coverage of the 1997 Asian economic crisis and the IMF bailout, sourcing patterns in US newspapers were compared to those of three Asian countries that received assistance from the IMF - Korea, Indonesia and Thailand - and those of Malaysia, which refused to accept this assistance. The findings are discussed in relation to globalization and neoliberal news frames, as well as to the indexing hypothesis and journalistic norms.
